Stiles zoo project earns LEED Gold

FORT LAUDERDALE - Stiles Construction President Timothy Moore announced that the Palm Beach Zoo’s new Melvin J. and Claire Levine Animal Care Complex has become the first zoo animal hospital in Florida to achieve Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

The veterinary care complex built by Stiles has achieved the statewide milestone through the U.S. Green Building Council’s rating system that considers five key areas: site planning, water management, energy management, material use, indoor air quality and innovation in the design process.

Green building litigation: No tsunami, but the tide will rise

Despite predictions that the construction industry would be inundated with Green building lawsuits, at this time there have been few reported lawsuits with direct Green building implications. There are several possible explanations for this - the cataclysmic downturn in the economy, the lack of measurement and/or disclosure of building performance that would make performance failures more apparent, or the possibility that Green building disputes are being subject to resolution in private arbitration or otherwise being settled.

Adler buildings earn Energy Star ratings

MIAMI - Adler Group has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star 2009 Certification, the national symbol for superior energy and resource efficiency, for its office buildings on 7925, 8095, 7955 and 8175 NW 12 St. in Doral. Only commercial buildings that rate in the top 25% of facilities in the nation for energy efficiency may qualify for the Energy Star Certification.

Commercial buildings that earn the Energy Star use an average of 40% less energy than typical buildings and also release 35% less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

New stormwater rules to raise cost of development

There are many challenges involved with commercial site design given the jurisdictional requirements of local governments, the Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Protection and, most importantly, the state’s water management districts.

The majority of stormwater management requirements are regulated by the state’s five water management districts and, traditionally, they require that two basic concepts be incorporated into the design of stormwater facilities: the rate of discharge and water quality.

Top 10 Green hotel chains in the United States

What are the major hotel chains doing to be eco-friendly?

At the current time it is cost-prohibitive for most of the chains to renovate chain-wide all heating and air systems, floors, waste disposal, and so forth. For the time being such things as voluntary towel reuse, eco-friendly shampoos and soaps, and reduction of paper use is the best many can do.
